A few of these do more work than the rest.
Tires, pressures, and stagger. Cold pressure is what you set; hot pressure is what the track gave back. Log both. If you run a pyrometer, take temps at three spots across the tread — inside, middle, outside — at the same probe depth every time so your numbers compare. Scales and cross-weight. Corner weights are the weight sitting on each tire at rest. From them you get your left-side percentage and your cross-weight (wedge) percentage — right-front plus left-rear, divided by total. On a circle-track car you’re not chasing a neutral 50%; you set a baseline and adjust bite from there. None of it means anything unless the number’s on the sheet. Springs and shocks. These are the fields racers get lazy about because they don’t change them often. That’s exactly why you log them — when you finally do change one, you need to know what you came off of. Record the rate at each corner and the shock number or valving.
Gear and rear-end. Gear ratio is a fast, cheap change that hugely affects drive off the corner and down the straight. Log the ratio and pair it with lap times so you can see which gear actually put down speed at each track.
Lap times and finish. This is the field that turns a setup sheet from a log into a tool. A setup without a result is just a configuration. With a best lap, an average, and a finishing spot, it’s evidence.
The setup didn’t change. The track did. Here’s where most setup sheets fall apart. You log a fast setup and save it — but never write down that the track was black slick and cool at feature time. Six weeks later you pull it for a tacky, heavy track and wonder why the car’s a handful. And you had no way to know, because the conditions weren’t on the sheet.

Do this consistently and your sheets become comparable. You stop asking “what did we run in May?” and start asking “what did we run the last time this track was slick and cool?” That’s the question that finds speed.
A baseline is your known-good starting point for a track — the setup you trust when you unload. You build it from your best past sheets for that track in similar conditions. Without recorded conditions, you can’t build a real baseline; you’re guessing from memory.
Once you’re on your baseline, change one thing at a time. It’s the oldest discipline in racing setup and the easiest to break when you’re frustrated in the pits. A paper binder feels reliable because it always has been. But its fatal flaw is search. With two seasons of sheets, flipping to find “slick and cool at this track” is a real chore — and if the binder’s in the other trailer, you’re out of luck.
