Tires are the only part of your car that touches the ground, and they are the one part most racers buy on a rumor. Somebody at the front says “aqua,” so four people buy aqua, sauce them ninety seconds before the call, and wonder why the car pushed. The compound was probably fine. The other three decisions were not. Here is the whole chain, in order, with a clock attached to it.
RC tire prep is everything you do to a mounted tire between buying it and running it: choosing the compound, choosing whether to use traction additive, timing that application against your heat, and deciding when the set is finished. That is four decisions, and most racers only think hard about the first one.
Compound is what the tire is made of. Additive is what you put on it. Timing is when you put it on. End of life is when none of that works anymore. Get any one of them wrong and the other three stop mattering.

Pick your compound by the grip level and the air temperature, not by what the surface is called. EuroRC says it directly: “Selection of the compound is more relative to the condition of the track that the surface itself” (EuroRC). Two clay ovals in the same town on the same night can want different rubber.
Compound is the hardness of the rubber — the same idea as durometer on a full-size race tire, though RC makers almost never publish an actual durometer figure. What they publish instead is a trade. EuroRC puts it plainly: “More soft the selected compound, more better is the grip. It also unfortunately means that tire will wear out in shorter time,” while a “hard compound tire has longer life but does not offer such good grip.”
Horizon Hobby lays the same ladder out by condition: soft compounds “work best on well-packed tracks that have little loose material on the surface,” medium compounds are “especially effective when the track conditions are less than perfect,” and hard compounds are “often used on carpet and turf tracks and work well in hot conditions” (Horizon Hobby).
The most useful thing a manufacturer gives you is a temperature window. Pro-Line’s compound chart pairs every compound with one:

Read those windows sideways and you get the rule that actually saves you money: the same track wants a softer compound in the morning than it does at three in the afternoon (Pro-Line Tire Compound Guide).
Because every manufacturer runs its own private scale, and the scales do not translate. Pro-Line uses letter-and-number codes — S5, M4, M3, M2, MC. JConcepts names compounds by color, offering the Sprinter and Rehab in “green, blue, and aqua,” and the Ellipse in “an even wider variety of compounds from Black all the way to Gold” (JConcepts).
There is no conversion table between the two, and anybody who hands you one made it up. “Blue” is not “M3.” Buy inside one brand’s system, learn where your track sits in that system, and treat a second brand as a separate experiment.
Charts also go stale, which is why anything you read — including this post — needs a date on it. In April 2026 JConcepts added a purple carpet and turf compound alongside the existing pink — the product listings read, “Available in original pink (medium) and purple (soft) compound to provide more grip when surfaces have worn or lower traction conditions exist” (JConcepts, April 23, 2026). A compound chart printed in 2024 would not have that option on it. Pull the current chart off the maker’s site every season.
RC traction compound is a liquid you brush onto the tread that softens the surface of the rubber so it grips more. Racers call it tire sauce, tire additive, or dope, and the three words mean the same thing. One RC reference defines it as “a fluid that can be applied to tires to increase their traction by making them softer” (Sodialed); another describes it as “a tire-prep liquid or compound used to add grip to RC racing tires, especially on-road and indoor track tires” that works by “softening the surface slightly and helping the tire bite better on smooth, high-grip surfaces” (RaceNRCs).
Notice what both of those have in common: smooth surfaces. That is the whole boundary of where additive helps. On a dusty outdoor dirt track the additive turns your tread into flypaper — “dust will stick to it and can actually decrease the grip of the tire,” per Sodialed. Indoor clay and carpet are the natural home for a bottle of sauce. A dry, dusty, slick outdoor oval usually is not.
Two warnings before you open anything. First, compatibility: “Do not assume every tire sauce is safe for every tire. Rubber compounds, foam inserts, and track rules all matter” (RaceNRCs). Test a new product on a retired set before you put it on race rubber. Second, rules. We searched the BRCA’s 2026 Members Handbook (PDF) and found no rule governing traction additive; the closest thing is a general safety rule telling members to ask for a chemical product’s COSHH safety report and to skip products that don’t have one. That tells you additive policy gets set club by club and track by track. Ask at the drivers’ meeting, not after tech.
Published guidance clusters between 10 and 20 minutes — and here is the part nobody says out loud: none of the sources publishing a number is a tire manufacturer.
The sources that do commit to a number don’t give the same one. Sodialed’s reference says additive “is most often applied about 15 minutes before a race to give it time to absorb into the rubber (or foam) and take effect.” A February 2026 on-road guide says “the standard recommendation from most manufacturers is to allow the tires to sit for ten to twenty minutes while the additive works its way into the compound,” stretching toward thirty minutes in cold conditions (RC Press). A third widely circulated beginner article on tire sauce gives no timing figure at all. And the on-road guide above is published under an anonymous username and names no manufacturer behind that “standard recommendation,” so weigh it accordingly; on a question this specific, the instructions on the bottle in your hand outrank any article, including this one.
So treat 15 minutes as the starting point, not the answer, and let your own notes move it.
Application matters as much as duration. Put on “a thin and even coat” to the tread with “the applicator sponge that comes with most bottles, a refillable pen designed specifically for this purpose, or even a clean paintbrush for more precision” (RC Press). More sauce is not more grip; it is a longer wait and a greasier tire.
How far up the tire you go is an on-road technique, and it is directional. Some drivers treat the entire circumference of the tire, while others apply additive “only to the inside edge of the front tires to encourage rotation” and put “a full coat to the rear tires to ensure stability and traction on corner exit” (RC Press). That is a steering-versus-stability trade you can actually feel. It is also on-road specific — do not carry it straight over to a dirt buggy.
Then wipe. Before the tire touches the surface, “the tires must be wiped completely dry with a clean rag or microfiber cloth,” because “excess liquid acts as a lubricant rather than a grip aid” (RC Press). Wet-looking tires in the staging queue almost always mean somebody sauced too late.

If you run tire warmers, they change the clock and they are their own rulebook question at a lot of tracks. The same on-road guide puts the target for rubber tires at 110–125°F, which is a reasonable starting point but is not a tire maker’s published figure — check the warmer’s own instructions and your track’s rules before you plug anything in.
Grip moves all day, so the setup that was right for your heat race is usually wrong by the feature. That is not a tire problem. That is the track doing what tracks do.
Morning is cool and often damp, and the surface is tacky and green. That is when the soft end of the chart earns its money — Pro-Line’s chart lists M4 super soft below 70°F. By mid-afternoon the sun has pulled the moisture out, the fast line has rubbered in, and the rest has gone dusty. Now the chart points the other way: M2 medium, outdoor, above 80°F. One step harder as the day heats up is the normal move, not a panic move.
JConcepts frames the same thing from the driver’s seat: having a tire available in several compounds lets racers “make the best educated decision on what will provide the best lap times as the track may gain grip or even in some cases lose it.” Watch what the track prep crew does between rounds, too — a water truck or a fresh drag resets your afternoon plan in ten minutes.
Additive follows the same curve, backwards. As bite climbs, you want less of it: on high-grip tracks, where too much traction makes a car twitchy, “a shorter soak time may be beneficial to keep the car manageable” (RC Press), and in the cold you go the other way toward the thirty-minute end. Outdoors and dusty, the honest answer is often none at all. A set is done when it stops responding, not when the tread runs out — and tires die three different ways that look nothing alike. None of the guides cited here puts a lap number on RC tire life, because compound, surface, temperature, and how much sauce you poured on move that number too far to print.
The first way is ordinary wear: the pins round off, tear, or chunk out. Foam tires in particular are “prone to ‘chunking’” (Horizon Hobby). That one is easy — you can see it from across the pit table.
The second is the one that costs races. The tread depth still looks fine, but the surface has gone shiny and hard from heat cycles and solvent, and the tire will not take additive anymore. Soft compounds get here first, which is exactly why Horizon tells you to “buy spares of soft compound RC tires, because your RC car will wear them out fairly quickly.”
The third is invisible from outside. The foam insert has collapsed. Inserts “serve a purpose similar to the air pressure in real tires,” and “the softer the RC tires, the denser the foam insert needs to be” (Horizon Hobby) — so when the foam packs down, the carcass folds under load, the car goes vague, and on a high-grip surface it starts tripping over itself. The rubber can be perfectly good. Squeeze the tire between finger and thumb next to a fresh one; a dead insert gives way with almost no resistance.

That last row is worth reading twice. Uneven wear across the tread is the car telling you about alignment, and buying new rubber just resets the clock on the same problem — the fix lives in RC camber, caster and toe.
Log the combination, not the parts. “Aqua” in a notebook is worthless six weeks later. “Aqua, indoor clay, 74 degrees, 15 minutes of additive on the rears only, wiped dry, third run on the set, car was perfect for two laps then went loose” is a setup you can rebuild next April.
Write down all of it while the car is still warm:
Do it right after hot laps and again after the feature, before you tear down. A pocket notebook works. A photo of the pit-table whiteboard works. A spreadsheet works. The only version that fails is the one you meant to write later.
