What Is Stagger in Racing? How Tire Circumference Turns Your Car

Short answer: Stagger in racing is the difference in circumference between the right-side and left-side tire on the same end of the car. Measure both at race pressure around the center of the tread and subtract. On a locked rear axle, a bigger right rear makes the car turn left on its own. An open differential mostly cancels that.

Two tires. One is a little bigger around than the other. That’s the whole trick — and on a car with a locked rear axle it’s one of the strongest steering inputs you own. It’s cheap to change, fast to check, and it goes stale between hot laps and the feature while you’re arguing about springs. Here’s what it is, how to measure it, why your rear end decides how much it matters, and how to log it.

What is stagger in racing?

Stagger is the difference in circumference between the right-side and left-side tire on the same end of the car. Longacre Racing puts numbers on it: “if your right rear tire is 86-1/2” in circumference and your left rear tire is 84”, then you have 2-1/2” of stagger.”

Some racers call it roll out. Chassis builder BSB Manufacturing uses both words and explains the job it does: “The correct amount of stagger produces equal revolutions of the rear wheels when driving around the turns.”

You can have front stagger too, but it’s a different animal. BSB again: “This factor is not as big a concern at the front because the tires are not connected by an axle like the rear tires.” The rears are bolted to each other through the rear end. That’s where the leverage is.

Why does stagger turn the car?

Because the bigger tire covers more ground per revolution. Force both rear wheels to spin at the same rpm and the bigger one has to travel farther, so the car arcs toward the smaller tire — which on an oval is the left.

Street Stock Tech explains it with a Solo cup: roll one across the floor and it circles, because “the side with the larger diameter covers more ground per rotation than the smaller side.” Same deal on a race car — “by having a slightly larger tire on the outside (right side), the car naturally turns left.”

Get it wrong either direction and the car tells on you. Racing Part Sales covers both ends: “Too little rear stagger will make the car ‘push’ or plow towards the wall in extreme cases,” and “Too much stagger will make the car ‘loose’, or free.” That’s tight and loose in one sentence each.

A stagger change is quietly a cross-weight change too — Speedway Motors states that “Adding front stagger adds cross where as adding rear stagger takes out cross.”

Does stagger still work with an open or limited-slip differential?

Much less. Stagger is a steering input only when both rear wheels are forced toward the same speed, and how hard they’re forced depends entirely on what sits between them.

Racing Part Sales names the assumption hiding inside every stagger article you’ll read: “We are assuming that you are racing in a class that uses a locked rear wheel drive axle.” Change that and the conversation changes. “If you are racing in a different type of class, that uses an open differential, then stagger is nothing more than weight on that corner of the car.” As they put it, “the open differential does not care about size variation.”

This is the one racers get wrong most. Somebody runs three inches in a locked-rear Street Stock, wins, and tells a guy with a factory differential to go do the same. He buys tires, gains nothing, and blames the chassis. Check what’s in your rear end before you chase circumference.

Karts sit at the far end of this. A racing kart has “just one single, solid axle at the back” and its “rear wheels will spin at the same speed” (Flow Racers), so stagger acts like it does on a locked-rear stock car — direct and immediate.

How do you measure stagger?

With a flexible stagger tape or a stagger gauge, around the center of the tread, at race pressure. Right side minus left side, on the same end of the car.

  1. Set race pressure first. BSB: “Always inflate the tires to race pressures before measuring.” Longacre agrees — take it when “the air pressure is set to the desired level for racing.” A pound of air is real circumference on a bias-ply tire.
  2. Use the right tool. Longacre: “Always use a flexible ¼” tape or Stagger Gauge to measure each tire’s circumference, measuring at the center point of the tire.” A steel tape fights you and reads wrong.
  3. Measure both tires the same way. BSB: “Take a measurement around each tire near the middle of the tread.” Same spot, same tension, every time — consistency beats precision here.
  4. Subtract. Right-side circumference minus left-side circumference. That’s your stagger.
  5. Do it cold, then hot. Racing Part Sales: “cold after bead seat and then let back to recommended air pressure,” then “After the car returns from hot lapping check the stagger hot additionally.”
  6. Write both numbers down. BSB’s instruction is one line: “Check tire stagger both cold and hot, add this to setup notes.”

Longacre also recommends nitrogen over shop air, because “with nitrogen you will see less buildup of tire pressure as they heat up as nitrogen has less moisture than regular air.” Less pressure drift, less stagger drift.

How much stagger in racing should you run?

There’s no universal number, and anyone who hands you one without asking about your class, rear end, tires and track is guessing. Start from your chassis builder’s baseline and your own notes, then move off it in small steps.

For direction of effect, Longacre is clean: “The tighter the corners or flatter the track, more stagger is required. The wider the turns or the more banked the surface, less stagger is required.”

Notice they don’t agree. That’s not sloppiness — it’s the actual answer. A Sprint Car pairing a 105-inch right rear with a 92-inch left rear is running something a Street Stock racer would call insane, and BSB’s three-quarter-inch dirt figure would put a quarter-mile Street Stock in the wall. Don’t average these. Find the row that matches your car and treat it as a starting point, not a spec.

Even tire sizes are approximate. Speedway Motors warns that published circumferences “are always approximate references – we always recommend checking your true stagger.” American Racer notes that “All circumferences and C/L O.D.’s listed are operating measurements after break in.” The sticker is a suggestion. The tape is the truth.

How do track and tire type change what you want?

Track first: tighter and flatter wants more, wider and more banked wants less, per Longacre. A quarter-mile bullring and a banked half-mile shouldn’t share a stagger number.

Tire construction decides how you change it. On bias-ply, air is a knob — Speedway Motors: “More air on the right increases stagger, more air on the left decreases stagger, less air on the left increases stagger, and less air on the right decreases stagger.” On radials that door is closed: “Stagger is not affected on radial tires.” Radial racers buy stagger by picking sizes, not chasing it with an air gun.

Surface matters too, and dirt racers have fewer options. BSB is honest about it: on dirt “someone is not making our tires for each track like Nascar has, and the run out is not as great as it is for asphalt cars, but you can still achieve some stager.” Add a track that goes from tacky to slick in one night and you’re aiming at a moving target with a limited set of arrows.

What happens to stagger during a race?

It moves. Heat grows a tire and wear shrinks it, so the number you set at the trailer isn’t the number the car is racing on lap 20.

The feedback loop is what bites. Racing Part Sales describes a loose car: “the right rear tire is the one building all the heat. The heat in turn makes the tire grow, and increasing the right rear tire makes a car more Loose or free.” Loose builds heat in the right rear, the right rear grows, the car gets looser. A pushing car does the mirror image into the right front. A pyrometer tells you which loop you’re in.

That’s why the increments are so small. Racing Part Sales calls stagger “only as a very minor tuning aid” and warns that “An 1/8″ change in stagger on the rear of the car is a chassis altering change if everything else is right.” If you think you need a full inch, something else is wrong.

How to log stagger so it’s repeatable

A stagger number without context is trivia. Log it like this and it’s a tool:

  • Both circumferences, not just the difference. RR and LR in inches, plus the subtraction. Front too, if your class tunes it.
  • Cold and hot, every session. Two numbers per end for hot laps, heat, and feature.
  • Pressures right next to it. On bias-ply tires, stagger and pressure are the same conversation.
  • Tire ID and compound. Which tire was on which corner, and its hardness if you run a durometer.
  • Rear end type. Locked, locker, limited slip, or open. It’s the multiplier on everything above.
  • Track condition and what the car did. Tight in, loose off, no forward bite — in your own words, used the same way every week.

Paper works fine. A binder, a printed sheet, and a pen that lives in the trailer beat the best memory in the pits. The only rules are that you do it every session and that you keep it, because the value isn’t tonight’s number — it’s the twenty nights behind it.

Is stagger the same as roll out?

Mostly. Circle-track racers use “roll out” as another name for stagger, and BSB Manufacturing uses both terms for the same thing — “Subtract the two measurements to find stagger, or roll out as it is sometimes called.” Watch the context, though: in RC racing, rollout usually means something different — the distance the car travels per motor revolution, a gearing number, not a tire-pair difference.

How do I add or take out stagger?

Two ways. On bias-ply tires, air does it: more air on the right or less on the left adds stagger, and the reverse takes it out, per Speedway Motors. On radials that doesn’t work — Speedway Motors states stagger is not affected on radial tires — so you change it by mounting a different-size tire, the way sprint car teams do.

Does stagger matter on the front tires?

Less than the rear, for a specific reason: BSB Manufacturing points out that the fronts “are not connected by an axle like the rear tires,” so front stagger can’t force the car to turn the way rear stagger does. It still moves weight — Speedway Motors notes adding front stagger adds cross while adding rear stagger takes it out. Measure it, log it, expect less.

Do I need stagger if I run an open differential?

Not for steering. Racing Part Sales is explicit that with an open differential, stagger becomes “nothing more than weight on that corner,” because “the open differential does not care about size variation.” You’d still want the tires reasonably matched for predictable wear, but don’t buy tires expecting the turn-in a locked-rear car gets.

Should I set stagger cold or hot?

Both, and record both. Racing Part Sales recommends a cold reading after the bead seats and pressures are back to spec, then a hot reading when the car comes in from hot laps. Cold is what you set; hot is what you actually raced on. Longacre also recommends nitrogen over shop air, since it builds less pressure as tires heat.
