Short answer: Off season race car prep is the once-a-year window where you strip the car past what any weekly checklist reaches, inspect the parts you can’t see with the body on, and replace things on dates and measurements instead of symptoms. Start by reading your own season logs. Order long-lead parts first. Reassemble on a chassis you’ve confirmed is square.

That’s what off season race car prep is for — the one stretch of the year when the car can be in a hundred pieces on a Tuesday without costing you a race.
Because in season, every job competes with next Saturday. In-season work is triage: fix what broke, service what’s due, put the body back on. That’s the right call — a preventive maintenance system built on laps and intervals is what keeps you finishing races.
But a whole category of work won’t fit a five-day turnaround. Pulling the motor. Breaking down the rear end. Sending shocks out and waiting. Putting a bare chassis on a level pad and finding out it isn’t square. So it gets deferred another year, until something lets go.
It’s also the only time your suppliers aren’t buried. Speedway Motors lists a typical 2–4 day shock rebuild turnaround, “sometimes longer during peak season”, and AFCO asks customers to “allow 2 weeks for rebuilds”. Two weeks in November is nothing. Two weeks in May is two races.
Before anything comes apart, sit down with your season records and write the actual list. Not a wish list. The list.
Go night by night and pull three things: what broke or almost broke, what you kept adjusting around instead of fixing, and what you never got to look at. The parts that scared you in June feel fine by December — which is why you don’t do this from memory.
Then walk the car before you wash it. Dirt is evidence: streaks show what’s leaking, witness marks show what’s moving, a chewed frame rail says something’s contacting that shouldn’t. Take pictures. The pressure washer erases all of it.
Finish with a priority order: safety, then anything that ended a night this year, then anything that’s aged out, then the projects you want to do. Last bucket last, on purpose.
Work front to back and outside in, so nothing you remove comes off twice.
The order isn’t sacred. The principle is: don’t reassemble anything until the frame under it is confirmed.
Some parts go in the trash on a date or a measurement alone. The rule: anything that protects the driver, anything that fatigues invisibly, and anything with a printed expiration goes by the number. Everything else gets cleaned, inspected, and earns its spot back.

A cold layup does damage nothing on track will. Moisture, stale fuel, a flat battery and rust all work while the car sits still.
Fuel. Sunoco says non-oxygenated fuels “can last up to two years when sealed and kept in a cool, dark place,” while oxygenated fuels “typically have a shelf life of six to twelve months.” For a layup under six months, Sunoco says “fill the tank with fresh, stabilized fuel and run the engine briefly to circulate it”; longer than that, drain it or switch to a storage-formulated fuel. Store jugs sealed and labeled.
Battery. OPTIMA says to “make sure the voltage never drops below 12.4 volts for lead-acid batteries, including flooded and AGM batteries,” and to check it every three to six months, charging any time it falls below. Keep it cool and dry, and either disconnect the cables or run a maintainer.
Engine internals. AMSOIL’s Len Groom told EngineLabs that “some of those exhaust valves are left open to the atmosphere when you store it. If that happens to be a damp garage, moisture can really be an enemy.” Follow your engine builder’s storage procedure — fogging, storage oil, plugging the exhaust, or all three.
The rest of the layup. Hagerty suggests an oil change before anything sits over 30 days, since used oil carries contaminants; stands or slightly overinflated tires (2–5 pounds) against flat spots; steel wool in exhaust and intake openings against rodents; and no parking brake, so pads can’t fuse to rotors.
The rear end is the clearest case for a seasonal teardown, because the manufacturer says so. Winters Performance recommends rear end oil “every 5 races,” a ring-and-pinion look through the inspection plug “after every race,” and a full breakdown “every 20 races” in high-horsepower applications or “seasonally” in all others. Winters also suggests replacing your most-used quick change gears yearly in high-horsepower use.
So once a year the case comes apart: bearings inspected, gears read for pitting, seals replaced whether or not they were dripping.
Shocks are the other winter classic. You can’t judge a shock by feel, and last season’s rebound numbers are the only honest reference you have. Send them out, get them dynoed, rebuilt and dynoed again, then compare to your baseline.
If it’s a freshen year for the motor, fasteners get measured instead of guessed. Rod bolt stretch and valve spring pressure are measurements, not calendar items, and they need the engine open to take. Use your builder’s numbers and your fastener maker’s published spec.
Some of it does, and the dates are printed on the tags. SFI’s published spec list assigns recertification periods by spec: 2 years for 16.1 and 16.5 driver restraints and 27.1 window nets; 5 years for 38.1 head-and-neck restraints, 39.2 seats and 3.2A/10, /15 and /20 driver suits (“5 Years, including the year on tag”); and “5 Years + 2 Year Recert” for 28.1 fuel cells.
Belts are the one racers argue about, and SFI is direct about why: restraint webbing “loses about half of its strength in one year” from sun exposure, and “the useful life of the webbing in the straps of the restraint assembly shall not exceed two years.”
Recertification usually beats replacement on price. Performance Racing Industry reports Crow Safety’s Matthew Krick putting belt viability at two years, notes SFI allows suits to be recertified “every five years, starting with the year on the tag,” and quotes Impact Racing’s Eric Koup capping it at two recerts per suit.
Helmets follow Snell, not SFI. PRI notes Snell runs a “five-year cycle of issuing new racing helmet standards,” with SA2025 taking effect October 1, 2025 and manufacturers ending SA2020 production by the end of 2026. Dates aren’t the only test — Grassroots Motorsports is right that nicks, tears, sun damage and friction wear retire belts early no matter what the tag says.
Two notes: recertification takes weeks, so start in January, not the week before tech. And your sanctioning body can always be stricter than SFI. The rulebook wins.
Check the chassis square. With the frame bare, get it on a level surface and confirm it. Longacre recommends squaring to the front suspension pivot points rather than the frame rails, because “frame rails are not straight,” and lining up the right side tires, which “carry the highest forces.” Pointing all four wheels the same direction is what lets every adjustment behave predictably. A tweaked chassis makes every setup change lie to you.
Order parts on lead time, not price. Sort your debrief list by how long each part takes to arrive and order the slow stuff first — anything machined, rebuilt or backordered. Off-season sales are real, but the bigger savings is not paying overnight freight in June.
Read the new rulebook before you spend. Rules land in the off-season, and they land early — IMCA posted its 2025 division rules on November 21, 2024, covering body, frame, spoiler and drivetrain changes across seven divisions. Read yours cover to cover first. A spoiler spec can turn a purchase into scrap.
Finish with fluids and a baseline. Tilton president Jason Wahl on brake fluid: “For sure a full flush and fill at the beginning of each season.” Glycol-ether DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 fluids are “very hygroscopic,” Tilton notes, and once fluid saturates at 3.7 percent water by volume that water can boil in the lines. Then scale the car, set ride heights and cross weight, and torque everything to your builder’s torque spec.
Shift this to match your region — a Florida racer’s winter is nothing like a New York racer’s. The order matters more than the months.

This is the part nobody photographs and everybody wishes they’d done.
That last one is the whole ballgame. The off-season only compounds if you can remember it. Otherwise every winter starts from zero and you tear into a rear end you rebuilt last year.
Plan on weeks of shop time spread across the layoff, not one marathon weekend. A full strip-down, drivetrain service, safety audit, chassis check and reassembly is a big job, and outside work stacks calendar time on top — AFCO asks two weeks for shock rebuilds, and gear recertification runs longer. Start early so the waiting overlaps instead of stacking.

Different jobs, different clocks, both required.
