Points Fund

A points fund is money a track or series sets aside for the end of the season and pays out on final championship standings, separate from the purse paid at each individual race.

Also called:
championship points fund, year-end fund, championship fund

In practice

Scale runs from a banquet check at your local bullring to real money on the national tours. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series posted a $1.1 million points fund for 2026 with $225,000 to the champion; its 2024 fund paid the champion $175,000 and paid down through the top 13 full-time drivers. Drag racing does it too — Lebanon Valley Dragway lifted its Super Pro championship from $2,100 to $5,000 to win in 2021. Attendance is usually baked in: the separate World of Outlaws Winner Circle bonus paid $3,000 a month in 2024 to full-time drivers with perfect attendance. Find out how deep your fund pays, and what you must run to be eligible, before you plan a season around it.

Why it matters

A points fund is what makes a consistent, unspectacular season pay, but it only pays if you run enough of the schedule to still be in the standings when the checks are written.
