Short answer: Racing safety gear expiration dates come from the SFI spec printed on the label, not from the day you bought the part. Belts, window nets and fire bottles run a two-year clock. Multilayer suits, head-and-neck restraints and fuel cell bladders run five. Helmets carry no SFI recertification period at all.

Every other wear item on your car is counted in laps. Rotors, rod bolts, shocks, birdcage bearings — you run them, you log them, you change them. The safety stuff is different. It’s counted in months, off a date somebody stamped on a tag before it ever left the factory, and that’s exactly why it sneaks up on you. Nobody buys a belt set in March planning to get turned away in June. They just never looked at the tag, and the tech inspection line is a terrible place to do your first read.
The dated items are the ones SFI assigns a recertification period to. The ones marked “N/A” — gloves, helmets, padding, driveshafts — live or die on condition alone.
SFI recertification is the process of sending a certified part back to its original maker at the end of its stated period so it can be inspected, repaired and re-labeled. SFI’s own spec list puts it in one sentence: “An item with a recertification period must be sent back to the original manufacturer at the end of this time frame for inspection” (SFI Foundation). That is the detail most articles skip. The clock running out doesn’t automatically mean “buy new.” It means “it goes back.”
About two-thirds of the entries on SFI’s list carry one. Driveshafts, roll cage padding, gloves and helmets are among those that carry none, and the chassis and roll cage specs defer to class rules instead.
Why do soft goods age out at all when they look fine? Because the test that certifies them includes accelerated weathering. NASA Speed News watched SFI run gear through cycles of UV and then “a damp, humid night in Florida,” over and over, and summed it up bluntly: “And that friends, is why window nets expire” (NASA Speed News). Your trailer is that test, run slower.

Three rows on that chart surprise almost everybody. Seats expire — a custom stock car seat to SFI 39.1 is on a two-year period, a standard seat to 39.2 on five. Roll cage nets are separate from window nets, spec 37.1, and run their own two years. And stock car steel wheels carry five years, which is not a thing most weekly racers have ever heard of.
The undated rows of the chart matter just as much. Your driveshaft loop isn’t a dated item, it’s a rules item. Roll bar padding carries no SFI period. Neither do gloves, shoes, socks or fire underwear — those are all SFI 3.3 driver accessories, and SFI’s suit article confirms the 3.2A suit rating “does not include underwear. It is certified through SFI Spec 3.3 for Driver Accessories” (SFI Foundation). Retire that gear on condition, not on a calendar.
Which suit you own decides whether you have a clock at all. SFI rates suits by thermal protective performance — seconds before a second-degree burn — and only the heavier ratings carry a period:

On the certification label, almost always as a month and year sitting next to the spec number. JEGS describes the general pattern well: the date appears in “a designated section of the label, often accompanied by the SFI specification number” (JEGS). Past that, the format changes item to item, and knowing which one you’re looking at saves you twenty minutes on your back under the dash.

Two of those deserve a closer look. On belts, the date is the date of manufacture, and SFI says the tags carry it specifically so “drivers and race officials [can] easily determine when the belts reach their 2-year life span” (SFI Foundation). A set that sat in a warehouse for eight months is eight months old the day it lands on your bench.
On a head-and-neck restraint, the marking is physical, not printed. NecksGen describes the silver and blue SFI sticker as having “a hole punched on the year and date that your device was either manufactured, or last recertified” (NecksGen). Punch plus five years is your date. Photograph it now, because that sticker lives on a part that gets thrown in a gear bag every week.
While you’re under there with a light: the belt mounting hardware doesn’t carry its own date, but it does carry a torque spec. Check the bolts when you pull the old set out. It’s free.
Not according to SFI or Snell. SFI’s spec list assigns no recertification period to helmets under 24.1, 31.1 or 41.1, and Snell states flatly that “unused helmets stored in good condition do not automatically expire after five years” (Snell Memorial Foundation).
The familiar five-year rule is softer than racers think. Snell calls replacing helmets every five years “a judgement call based on testing helmets used by the California Highway Patrol by Dr. George Snively.” That’s guidance built on daily-driven police helmets, not a certification deadline.
What actually expires is your sanctioning body’s acceptance of the standard year on your label. Snell revises its standards on a five-year cadence, SFI updates helmet labels the same way — 2005, 2010, 2015 — expressly to aid “in tech inspection and determining the age of the helmet” (SFI Foundation). Then every rulebook picks how many cycles back it will still take.
How far back varies more than you’d guess:
One rule survives all of it: replace a helmet that has taken an impact, regardless of what the label says. And note that SA is the auto racing standard while M is the motorcycle one — per Snell, “the SA standard requires flammability test while the M and K standards do not.”
They disagree more often than you’d like, and the honest answer is to follow whichever is stricter. The spec decides whether your label is valid. The rulebook decides whether you race.
Belts are the clearest example. SFI’s seat belt article says “the useful life of the webbing in the straps of the restraint assembly shall not exceed two years and they must be replaced at or before that time.” IMCA’s 2026 Modified rulebook requires an SFI-approved five-point assembly but only says “Recommended: Safety belts no more than two years old.” Recommended, not required. Your track may be stricter than IMCA, and plenty are.
Published lists disagree too. Two examples we ran into, both current as of July 2026:
Head-and-neck restraints have a third version. UK retailer Tegiwa’s homologation guide says that “if the HANS device comes with a SFI certification sticker, there is no expiry date” (Tegiwa). SFI’s spec list puts 38.1 at five years, and NecksGen says outright that “SFI requires that all 38.1 Spec. head and neck restraints be replaced or recertified every 5 years.” Go with SFI and the manufacturer.
This is not a solved problem for racers, either. A Grassroots Motorsports forum thread on exactly this question ran into the same fog, with one poster writing “I’m not aware of any non pro organization that cares about the age of a good racing suit” and the thread landing on the only advice that always works: “CALL THE TECH PEOPLE FOR THE GROUP YOU WILL RUN WITH.” (Grassroots Motorsports). Do that once a year and write down what they tell you. Read your own rulebook cover to cover before the season and you’ll pass tech without the drama.
Start the month before, not the week before. Recertification is a shipping problem, not a shopping problem, and two of the three big ones have windows you can miss.
Do all of that in November and the money lands in the off-season, when the shop is slow and the parts are in stock. Do it in June and you’re paying rush freight to race Saturday. It folds neatly into the rest of your off-season prep — same bench, same weekend, same notebook.

What expires is your sanctioning body’s acceptance of the standard year printed on the label. IMCA’s 2026 Modified rules accept SA2015, SA2020 and SA2025 helmets. Replace any helmet that has taken an impact, whatever the date says.
Every two years, and the bottle is finished at six. SFI’s spec list gives on-board fire suppression systems a two-year recertification period with a six-year maximum service life. That means the original certification plus two services, then you buy a new bottle. Budget for that sixth year instead of finding out in the tech line that your system cannot be recharged again.
No date, according to SFI. Gloves, shoes, socks, underclothing and helmet skirts are certified under SFI 3.3 for driver accessories, which carries no recertification period on SFI’s spec list. Same for single-layer suits at 3.2A/1, 3.2A/3 and 3.2A/5. Retire those on condition instead: burned, torn, thin at the seams, or gone stiff and shiny after a season.
Often, yes — but belts are the exception worth knowing. SFI’s spec list says an item with a recertification period goes back to the original manufacturer at the end of the time frame for inspection. NecksGen recertifies SFI 38.1 restraints for another five years, and Fuel Safe recertifies FIA-FT3 bladders for two more. Belts split by spec: 16.1 and 16.2 assemblies can be re-webbed and re-certified by the maker, while 16.5 and 16.6 assemblies must stay as originally built and date their two years from manufacture — which leaves replacement as the only route.
You can absolutely run this on paper. A page in the front of the binder with six dates on it beats what most of the pit area is doing, and if you actually look at that page every November, you will never get sent home over a tag.
